Success Story - Jackie Collins Ride To Conquer Cancer Team

Jackie’s Ride to Conquer Cancer

Success Story - Jackie Collins Ride To Conquer CancerIt was a beautiful, sunny day in June when myself along with my cycling team, Gastown Cycling, set out to complete the 2 day, 250 kilometer bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle for the Ride to Conquer Cancer supporting the BC Cancer Foundation. Over 2,000 riders lined up at the start gate on a unseasonably warm Saturday morning in June to endure the challenge we faced in front of us.

After a detailed gear check, friendly exchanges between family and friends and a few motivational speeches, we set off to complete our goal. It was amazing to see so many people come together to complete such a daunting, yet inspiring task.

After the first day of riding, we set up camp in Mt. Vernon which is approximately the half way point to our final destination. Thousands of hungry riders lined up for food and piled into the main tent where we anxiously awaited for the president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation, Mr. Douglas Nelson, to speak.  There were many speakers that night including riders who shared their personal stories of how cancer has touched their lives and the lives of people close to them.

The next morning we all rose at the crack of dawn. Tired and sore we made our way to the line-up of eager participants waiting for breakfast. The air was crisp and everybody was nervously excited as we gathered our gear and made our way out the start gate. Day two brought us a few more rolling hills, captivating landscape and a high energy and emotional finish line where we were met by thousands of family and friends waiting to congratulate their loved ones.

I was able to personally raise $10,300 in 2013 towards the BC Cancer Foundation and I could not have achieved that without the support of the YPH Foundation along with my amazing friends, family, clients and co-workers. Through this event, we were able to create awareness and raise substantial funds which are put towards the efforts of conquering cancer.

All of my donors were in my heart and mind as I crossed the finish line on that Sunday afternoon. Without their generosity, none of this would have been possible.

Thank-you!

Sincerely,

Jackie Collins
